S.G.G.S KHALSA COLLEGE, MAHILPUR
at a Glance
Shri Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College, Mahilpur, is a Post Graduate,
Multi Faculty, Co-educational Premier Institution in a rural
area of District Hoshiarpur (Punjab). The College was established
in 1946 by his holiness 'SANT BABA HARI SINGH JI KAHARPURI'
the Founder President of the Sikh Educational Council, with
a missionary zeal for imparting quality education to the socially,
economically and educationally deprived people of this rural,
backward and kandi area. It is a top-notch educational centre
amongst the premier institutions of higher learning in Northern
India. The college campus is spread over 28 acres of land with
imposing buildings in lush green, pollution free environment,
away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The College has
serene, soothing and stimulating ambience with a the rich academic,
sporting and cultural history. It is a place where one can learn,
interact, grow and discover, where excellence, creativity and
innovation are the only bottom line, where merit is honoured
and commitment rewarded.
The College is situated on the Hoshiarpur-Chandigarh Road at
a distance of 22 kilometres from Hoshiarpur, 37 kilometers from
Phagwara, 35 kilometers from Nangal Dam and 45 Kilometers from
Una (Himachal Pradesh) in the foothills of Shivalik range.
STUDIES CENTRES IN THE COLLEGE:
We know that India has produced great thinkers and
social leaders who, by their revolutionary and path-breaking
thoughts and actions, have left a lasting impact on not only
India, but also on the world as a whole. They developed indigenous
ideas and provided cultural and ethical identity to India. There
is a great need to acquaint both teachers and students with
their thinking and their work and to involve them in studies,
research and field-work based extension programmes of constructive
work.
Keeping these broader objectives in mind, the College established
four studies centres
1. Nehru Studies Centre 2. Buddhist Studies Centre,
3. Gandhian Studies Centre 4. Dr. Ambedkar Studies Centre
sponsored by the University Grant Commission (UGC) under its
scheme of epoch-making Social Thinkers of India during the XI
Plan. The objectives of these Centres are to acquaint teachers
and students with the thoughts, actions and works of these outstanding
social icons and pursue studies, research and field-work based
extension Programm
5. Centre for Women's Studies: Keeping in view the amelioration
of women's condition in India, particular in rural-backward
India and to enhance the accessibility of basic needs like education,
employment, health and law to them, the College is successfully
running the Centre for Women's Studies sponsored by the University
Grants Commission.
RESEARCH PROJECTS:
1. Major Research Project: The College feels
proud to mention here that a major research project on INTER-FAITH
DIALOGUE IN SHRI GURU GRANTH SAHIB sponsored by the University
Grants Commission under the auspices of Principal Dr. S. S.
Randhawa is under progress.
2. Minor Research Project: Indo-US Strategic Partnership
in the Post Cold War sponsored by the University Grants Commission
under the auspices of Prof. Sardool Singh, Department of Political
Science, is under progress.
3. Similarly, another Minor Research Project: "Assessment
of Maturity Status of Punjab School Boys aged 12 to 15 years
"sponsored by University Grants Commission under the auspices
of Prof. Lakhwinder Singh Department of Physical Education is
under progress.
COLLEGE LIBRARY:
The College has a well stocked fully computerized
Library with a treasure of more than 70 thousands valuable books
and it subscribes to more than one hundred journals. In addition
to the course books general books for personality development,
general knowledge, handbooks, yearbooks, reference books etc.
are also added to the collections. The library subscribes to
national and international subject journals, magazines of current
interest along with national and regional dailies to keep the
students abreast of the day to day happenings in the world and
their fields of study. This vast reservoir of knowledge has
two majestic reading halls. The duplex library is well furnished
and it can seat 200 students at a time in its spacious reading
halls.
SPORTS HISTORY:
The College occupies a noteworthy place in the sports
history of India and it is popularly known as the 'FOOTBALL
NURSERY OF ASIA'. Footballer Jarnail Singh (Arjuna Awardee)
and Gurdev Singh Gill (Arjuna Awardee) are the glorious products
of SGGS Khalsa College Mahilpur. The College possesses well
maintained sports grounds and facilities for games such as,
football, hockey, cricket, basketball, volleyball, athletics
etc.. The College also has an ultra-modern gymnasium and a hall
for indoor games. It is one of the very few colleges in India
to possess its own fabric. It is a matter of great honour for
this institution that its Football team (Men) has beenwinning
the Panjab University 'A' Division Football Championship for
the last 20 years continuously. and Women team also won the
Football Championship of the Panjab Universities.
NATIONAL CADET CORPS:
The College lays great emphasis on N.C.C. training
as it makes the youth disciplined and patriotic, broadens their
outlook and inculcates in them qualities of self-reliance, leadership
and determination. Our Cadet Rohit Kumar led the Punjab, Haryana,
Himachal Pradesh and UT Chandigarh Directorate in the Republic
Day Parade 2006 at New Delhi.
NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME:
This scheme aims at creating in the students a sense
of participation in nation building through programmes such
as eradication of illiteracy, slum cleaning, road building,
voluntary health service, agricultural development, family planning,
National Integration Campaign and Career Guidance for students
and to inculcating a spirit of equality and fraternity among
them. The College has one unit of N.S.S. for boys and one for
girls. Students are encouraged to join N.S.S. in large numbers.
TEACHERS' FLATS:
Keeping in view the accommodation problems of teachers
who from distant places, the College provides well-built, well-
maintained , airy and spacious Teachers' Flats within the college
premises, which is desirable in institution of repute. These
flats are provided with incessant fresh water and power supply.
FACULTY HOUSE:
The teachers teaching for short term periods are
also provided with individual rooms in a well maintained faculty
house in the College premises. The faculty house has sufficient
accommodation provision for more than 20 teachers to live in
comfortably.
GUEST HOUSE:
Keeping in view the comfortable stay for the visiting
guests, the College has made excellent provision of hospitality
for them in the well maintained Guest House with ultra-modern
amenities within the College premises.
CO-OPERATIVE MESS/CANTEEN:
The College has recently constructed a magnificent
duplex building to house a well furnished anf hygienically clean
co-operative mess and canteen. Separate sitting arrangement
for boys, girls and respected staff members has been made.
HOSTEL FACILITIES:
The College maintains comfortable and safe hostels
for resident students within the campus. There are three magnificent
residential hostels, one for boys and two for girls, with all
modern amenities for comfortable living. All the rooms have
been designed to provide adequate moving space and ample air
and light.
The College provides resident students with 'home away from
home' by maintaining comfortable and safe hostels for them within
the campus. Hostel facilities included:
* Separate hostel facility for boys and girls within the campus.
* Adequate ventilation and lighting facility.
* Arrangement for 24 hours power backup for light load.
* Hot water in winters (scheduled timings) .
* Facilities for indoor and outdoor games like Table tennis,
Badminton, Football, Basket Ball, Volleyball, Lawn Tennis, Cricket,
Hockey etc.
* Hygienic and nutritious meals.
* Two wheelers may be allowed for hostel residents with a permission
of the authorities (Four wheelers are strictly prohibited).
* 24 hours security.
* Gymnasium facility.
* Tuck shops to cater to all needs of the students at all hours.
* Round the clock services of a Doctor, Ambulance, medicines
etc. to provide immediate relief to the students, bad in health.
COLLEGE STRIVING FOR:
Research Centre: In consonance with the aim
of systematically improving an academic knowledge as envisioned
by the Founding Fathers of this Institution at the very outset,
the College paying an overwhelming attention to research-oriented
programmes. The College has applied for the Research Centre
to Panjab University, Chandigarh in the Department of Punjabi.
COLLEGE LABS:
The College has two Physics labs (Senior and Junior),
two Chemistry labs (Senior and Junior) majestically well-equipped
with ultra-modern gadgets, one big gas plant, two fully air-conditioned
computer labs fully air conditioned lash with 137 computers
and internet facilities, one psychology lab, one language lab,
one educational technology lab, and three modern LCD projectors.
COLLEGE MAGAZINE:
The College magazine 'GOBIND NIDHI' is run by an
Editorial Board consisting of members of the staff and students
who have some flair for writing. It provides a platform to the
students for self-expression and self-exploration through various
literary geners in Hindi, Punjabi and English. Prizes are awarded
to the best student contributors.
PLACEMENT AND GUIDANCE CELL
The College has a separate Placement Cell headed by a full time
Placement Officer. The Placement Cell has successfully placed
many students in the renowned companies. Many students of BCA,
P.G.D.C.A., B.Com., M. Com., B.Sc., M.Sc. (Physics, Chemistry,
Industrial Chemistry and Instrumentation Physics) and other
classes have been placed at good positions in various companies,
industries, educational and economic institutions and industries
in Punjab elsewhere.
This Cell also helps students to avail the various scholarships
and stipends granted by the Panjab University Chandigarh, Punjab
Govt., UGC, India Govt., etc.
